  1. I know this has been asked before and I've done a search on it but found nothing that will help.

I had my MPGs playing fine in WMP this morning. DVDs SVCD's etc no problem.

I then made the mistake of de-installing Main Concept MPEG Encoder and was asked a question at the end in the deinstall which I said yes to.

Now I can't play any DVD's or svcds at all. Now my WMP just does into a flickering mad mode when I go near an MPG or click it or open it.

I've tried to reinstall PowerDVD and Main concept again to get rid of the problem but it's not happening.

I should have paid attention to the question but it appears to have had a completely destructive effect on my system.

I've also tried to install a stand alone MPG codec for WMP but to no avail.

Anyone know how to repair the damage?

    Thanks.....

  3. Tried that....Re-installed WMP 9 to no avail.

It's like the link between WMP and the Video codec is broken somehow.

  4. WMP uses the installed MPEG2 drivers from other software to play DVD/MPEG files. You'll need to re-install the DVD player software, or in fact ANY DVD player software that comes with it's own MPEG2 codec. then you're stuff should play fine.

I had major problems with this once. I fixed it but can't remember how.
Just for the hell of it try installing the WinDVD demo.
I seem to remember somthing about Graphedit too. I think
    it gives useful clues.

Edit: You got XP ? Back it up to yesterday

  7. OK... When I played back a DVD MPG file... although WMP couldn't play the video back, it did play the sound back. Going into File > Properties revealed that the video codec it was trying to use was 'Ahead's'.

So I deinstalled Nero and restarted and now it's fixed the problem. DVD's and SVCD's now play back fine in WMP.

Is there a way of forcing WMP to use a specific MPEG2 plakback codec? WMP seems to be deciding all by itself what to use. It's now decided to use the Elecard MPEG2 Video Decoder instead which works.

    Very strange....

    Thanks to all that replied.....!

That reminds me. I had a Elecard MPEG codec install itself somehow,
and then it timed out because it was a timelimited demo and screwed
me up completely. I was pissed. You might want to get rid of that.
