ok, firstly forgive my ignorance as im a complete newb with these things, i have some video files which were mp4 and mkv files which wouldnt play through my sata mobile video device, i have noticed that .avi files play fine so i converted the files through WinAVI converter to .avi files but they still wont work.
im using a Argosy HV-358tx-750 external hdd media player, and i was wondering if anybody can tell me of a way to convert the files so they will play back on my TV??
any help or advice will be much appreciated

Use a program like GSpot to compare files that do and do not work and see what is different about them.
