  1. Ok, I got the whole dvd to vcd thing down. Been happily doing that for months & then I went & messed it up by getting a new notebook with a dvd burner. I just couldn't leave well enough alone!
Ok, now, tmpgenc plus has a setting for dvd. So, can I continue to us smart ripper, dvd2avi, & the tmpgenc plus with the dvd setting?
I tried it, but now I have 2 files that came out of the tmpgenc plus after I converted it? An audio file & a m2v file.
What do I do with those now?

Also, my boyfriend found #1 DVD Ripper somewhere, also known as dvdtox, but I can't find anywhere on here that they talk about that either. Supposedly it does the ripping & converting by itself.
    It gives me 3 choices to rip to. mpg1-vcd, mpg2-svcd, & mpg4 - avi/divx.
Which one would I rip it to?
And, he's telling me that he's making dvds with avis? Can that be correct?
    I'm soooo confused!

You need to author and burn to disk. (Author section over there <<<<.)

You are doing it the long way around but it does give very good quality. There are some faster programs that you might like better such as DVDShrink or DVD2One. Look in the guides for directions.

Avi to DVD is possible by converting the Avi to mpeg first, like what you have done with TMPGEnc.

    Good luck.

If your source is DVD then don't go through that whole re-encoding process just to make a copy of a DVD.

As ZippyP says try DVDSHRINK. It's free, very easy to learn and works in 30 minutes to less than 1 hour depending on your selection. It's easy to find and get help with that tool and it's commonly used by many on this site. Many times you can shrink the whole movie , trailers and menus and make them fit on 1 DVD and it looks very close to the original. All you need to do is burn it with your favorite burning app. Even with a 1x disc 55 minute burn, you can get a full DVD backup in less than 2 hours. No more long re-encodes for you.

You need to learn some new tools now because sometimes you will want to combine discs, author new menus, add background music etc.... Read the forum and see what others are using and then check the tool section for links to trial versions.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

I use 'DVD Decrypter' to rip the DVD to Hard Drive.

Then Use 'Ifoedit' to strip Audio & Subtitle Streams out of the VOB files.

Then use 'DVD Shrink' (3.0 Beta 5, not v2.3) to shrink the DVD.

The 'Nero' (v5.5.10.50, less bugs than v6) to burn.

All free programs but Nero, there are free burning program alternatives though.
