  1. when you encode a avi or asf file to a mpg1 does the picture quality get better? and how much better if i made it a mpeg2?

    No, you cant improve the quality. The only way is to get a source with better quality.

  3. Most of the time the AVI is less compressed so it will look better than MPEG1 and MPEG2 but MPEG2 will look better if your AVI has Superb quality.
    If I remember right form LSX Encoder MPEG1 is around 50:1 compression and MPEG2 is either 25:1 or 23:1.
    I just did a DIVX AVI at the highest quality and ended up 28:1, so it looked much better before I encoded to MPEG1 VCD(50:1).
    That why umcompressed AVI 1:1 always looks just like the original, but wow does it eat up hard disc space.
    Example
    10 min. umcompressed AVI - around 3-4 gigs file size
    40min. DIVX AVI - around 540-580MB file size
    Both are set at 352x240, 29.97 frames, 22050 16 bit audio
