i've used TMPGE and set my setting
352 * 240
4:3 525 line (NTSC)
29.97fps
CBR
1150 kbs
audio:192
BASICALLY followed the exact ordinary vcd settings, but when playing on my playstation it pauses every 3 or 4 seconds, and on heavy action parts it goes crazy- i see big green blocks everywhere and audio flying around into peices picture pausing freezing all kinds of stuff. i think the problem is the frame rate, but i'd rather get help from pros like you guys. first time trying, help me out. thanks.

VCD standard has audio: 224 kb (Probably isn't this but anyway...)

Have you experimented with different brands of cdr? The psx is very picky about media, especially for vcds. Also try turning your psx on its side or upside down. This pushese the laser closer to the disk and takes some of the strain off of it.

yeah i tried to flip it over and stuff but it doesn't seem to be the problem. because when a game lags, the sound lags as well, but in this case only picture pauses when sound comes out smoothly. so what i have after watching the damn thing for couple minutes is people murmuring and voice coming out seconds later. i believe it's the frame rate, i'm gonna attempt to convert it with lower one. but still can't be sure.... for other cd-rs i'll try that too.

I really don't see how it could possibly due to the framerate. 29.97 is the standard fps for ntsc vcds. While 23.976fps is also supported in the standard I kinda doubt the psx will handle that. Plus I used to use a psx vcd adapter and all my vcds were incoded in 29.97. You might give pal format a try because the vcd adapter does do pal conversion but your much better off sticking with ntsc if you can get it to work.
If you havent tried burning it with a different cdr brand than I'm almost positive thats your problem. The psx is reading alot more info off the disk when playing a vcd than when reading a game. If it cant get a good read off the disk then it is missing data as it plays which is where those big green blocks come from. Also like I said, the psx is more picky about media when playing a vcd than when playing a game, due to the added amount of data it must read.
Also are you sure you encoded it correctly? Does it play ok on your pc? -
yeah it plays fine on my pc. could you tell me what settings you used to burn playstation vcds?
i'm using nero and before burning it even if the file is decoded properly it gives me crap. i'm gonna try using
352 X 240 29 frame. and i'm using Memorex CDR, i think this one works the best when i'm burning playstation games. thanks for the pointers. -
What speed are you burning your VCDs at? 1x is recommended cos anything faster will not be picked up by the PSX laser (ie-skipping and lagging will occur). This might also be a sign that your PSX laser is getting old and might need to eventually be replaced. The PSX laser was not optimized to be used with constant reading like a VCD. This puts great strain on it and will cause it to wear out so much faster. I lost my first PSX like that. It worked fine at first with VCDs but then it too started skipping and lagging, so I turned it on it's side and upside down, that only worked for a while and soon enough (about 3 months later), my PSX laser was offically DEAD. I'm sure that this is your problem but in the meantime, just turn it on it's side and make sure you only burn your VCDs at 1X (i know it's a long wait but it's what has to be done). As far as the green blocks on the high action sequences of your movies, it should have something to do with the FPS decoding. You might want to consider raising the KBPS rate on your decoding and be sure to keep it on the required NTSC settings. Hope that might help ya. If all else fails just buy a Dreamcast (about $69.99 now) and you can make VCDS and use the controller as an interface (FF,RW,Pause,etc.). Good luck and keep burnin'! Peace out!

A post about VCD's and Playstations....happens every day...used to happen about once a week...but now it's getting to be more than once a day. Adam the moderator tries to jump and put out the brush fire but I think he's out numbered. Looks like we're going to have alot of psx lasers go up in smoke. -
This is crazy, I recently received a letter from Sony's Lawyers asking me to participate in a court battle(about a bug that was in the chipset of the early psx, and 1001 models that caused FMV's in psx games to skip and/or not play) and say that I havn't seen any skipping of FMV's on my or any early model psx game if they gave me any Sony or $25 check in return for my cooperation. I didnt accept cause EVERYONE know owns or used that model (1001) knows that these problems do exist and are very annoying. This reuined my experience with the FF9;-( The Videos would skip or freeze my psx and if Im lucky would work corectly.
Anyway if u have the same model as I have, thats probably the culprit. BTW, which VCD adapter are you using to watch your VCD's it could be faulty or something, I have a bunch of Farscape Video CD's that I made and would realy like to play them on my psx, the cheapest 1 I have heard of is like $49 bucks.
Peace
