    Hi everyone,

I have tried everything I can think of to convert my XViD AVI files into Toast-ready VCD MPG files. These AVI files can be watched on my computer but I would much rather have them able to be watched on my TV through my DVD player. FFMPEGX won't convert it correctly, and I tried to use mencoder cli as suggested by the post found at https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=137015&highlight=xvid but that just makes the files go from 180 mb each to around 380 mb each and will not help the conversion. Then today I tried the DIVXWMAConverter program and the outputted file didn't have sound and when I put it into DiVX Doctor II the output file was practically a green screen with sound that crashed Quicktime after a few seconds. Maybe I am forgetting something in FFMPEGX, but any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Wolfwood87

i can help you with this. I need to know what your settings are in ffmpeg, and what the terminal output was.

No matter what audio codec it is in, it is workable.

Thanks for your reply ZeroSix and I am very sorry for my late reply. Anyway, I would appreciate any help that you could give me. I took my XviD file and I am converting it to VCD using ffmpegX v.0.0.7d My settings were set by using the VCD NTSC setting from the Quick Presets menu. Then, the only settings that I changed were under the Tools menu:

Author to VCD - I will add my own chapters later so i don't wnat to hhave it in the .bin format
Split in "2" chunks - It is small enough that it doesn't need to be split

This should be all that I changed. Just for reference, all of the options under the "Options" menu were not checked except for Constant Bitrate. ffmpegX says that my XviD file is :

    VIDEO: [XVID] 640x360 24bpp 23.98 fps 876.5 kbps (107.0 kbyte/s)

in the area above the "Open..." button. I am encoding it right now, so thus far I only have this for the output in the terminal:

Sorry I can't be of more help right now, but when I finish (which may be a WHILE because I am encoding on a G3) I will post the rest of the Terminal output.

    Thanks,

If you have Toast, do this:

Take your original AVI file and drop it on Divx Doctor and convert it to a .mov.
Use Toast in the VCD heading to convert the .mov file created before to an VCD. Thats it.

If your AVI had AC3 audio then DIvx Doctor won't work on it. It willl get more complicated again. ZeroSix has the way to do it if this does'nt work. Good Luck!!

    Hi,

Unfortunately I wasn't able to complete the encoding last night, but I will do it tonight and post the results tomorrow if everything goes according to plan. Thanks for your advice JellyBean, and what you said is what i normally do for my AVIs, but these XviD files must have the wrong audio because when I convert any of them in DivX Doctor II it just gives me a green screen and then quits out of Quicktime. And, I have one correction to make, if it makes any difference. In my initial posting I stated that the mencoder cli didn't do anything besides increase the file size. Well, I didn't mention that it allows the audio to be played, which is helpful but doesn't help with the VCD part as far as I can tell.

Anyway, thanks to the both of you and I will post my results as soon as I can.

    Thanks,

OK, now I have my latest results. I used the same options in ffmpegX as yesterday, and this is what I got:

Looking through the code, it says that an error was found somewhere in the video. Then, I looked at the actual outputted file. It took an unusually long time to come up in Quicktime, and video seemed to not be in sync with the audio. So I went into MpegInfo and It showed that the video was about 4 mins shorter than the audio. So, I don't know what to do. Is it this specific file? What causes this? Thanks in advance.

Send me a clipping of your .avi file using the method described in the thread about the DishRip.

I will take a close look at it and see what I can come up with.

    ZeroSix,

The file should be uploaded to your iDisk account. It is a 15 sec clip of my original avi file. I had made a 30 sec clip but it was too big for your account, but if you need it and can get rid of about 1 megabyte I can upload that as well. Thanks for your help.

    ZeroSix,

No, this file as well as the other files in this series don't seem to play any audio in Quicktime or in VLC. One thing I did notice that I mentioned earlier however was when I did the conversion in mencoder cli it made the files audible. I can give you a clip of the same file but converted so that you can listen to the clip as well if thats what you need.

    Thanks,
    Wolfwood87

Strange... I cant get any audio out of the file using Mencoder and I cannot get it to detect any audio. There is no audio in Quicktime, VLC, Mplayer. I tried using the AVI demuxer of MediaPipe and it reports no audio. What format is it in?!?

If you could send me a clip with a converted audio stream it would be appreciated.

Yes, it is strange.... Can Quicktime and VLC normally play XviD files with sound? Anyway, I uploaded a 30 sec clip with sound to your iDisk. The best of luck to you!

    Thanks,

Quicktime and VLC should be able to as well as Mplayer. I did get this to work though using ffmpegX.

Using the .avi file you gave me with sound, here are my settings:

Set up ff to those exact settings and you should be fine. If you have a DVD player that doesnt support 23.98 fps VCDs, let me know and I will show you how to apply a 3:2 pulldown to change the framerate to 29.97.

    Hope this helps.

    THANK YOU ZEROSIX!!

I tried your settings on the test clip and they worked perfectly, thank you so much! I thought I would never be able to encode them, but a solution has been found!! I will try that whole file tonight and post my results tomorrow or as soon as possible. One question though, is this possible without the use of mencoder cli or is another option available for a quicker way to do the same job that mencoder does to the file? Just curious, definitely not a necessity for you to find the answer to if you don't happen to know already.

    Thank you very much,
    Wolfwood87
