  1. Have burnt a rip of a few dics and most tof them seem to have subtitles come on as default although i can turn them off with the remote its a bit annoying. What do i need to do to stop this happening with future rips? Sometimes though i even get original discs that start up with subtitles by default on my pioneer 454 player

  2. You should be able to turn that off in the setup of your DVD player. If not then use DVD2one and don't select any subtitles.

  3. What software are you using to backup movie? I know that DVDShrink and DVDFab exhibit this problem, but it seems to only show up on a few DVD players. My Apex doesn't turn on the subtitles by default, but my GF's GoVideo does.

Like Bob said, either turn off the subtitle when you're playing the backup movie or deselect all subtitles when backing up the movie.

  4. My DVD Player turns on Subtitles by default, but I can disable that by entering the DVD Setup menu.

  5. So I rechecked the GoVideo DVD player's setup menu again to see if there is an option to turn off subtitles. Sure enough there it was.. after scrolling down to 50 (okay I'm exaggerating a bit ) languages, I finally saw the option to turn off subtitles. The 'Subtitles' selection screen only shows 5 languages at a time so it didn't occur to me to scroll down after the 5th language as there was no icon (like an arrow pointing downwards) to indicate that there were more languages to choose from.

Burrying the 'Subtitles Off' option under 50 different languages is bad programming, if you ask me. I can't believe I blamed DVDShrink for this problem. I should be ashame!

I'm glad the problem is solved, but I do have one question: Before I turned off the GoVideo's auto-play subtitles, why was it that only movies backed up by DVDShrink played with subtitles on? It never happens with commercial DVDs.

    Here is the reason:

The commercial DVD's have commands (prohibitions) that
prohibit the DVD set-top player from doing certain things.

For example, the FBI Warning screen cannot be skipped
    or fast-forwarded.

Another example is that Subtitles are suppressed on the
    commercial DVDs by default.

When you rip a DVD, all prohibitions are disabled.
You can now fast-forward or skip FBI Warning screens.
But now the subtitles are also no longer suppressed.
