It is a little more complicated than that. But not much more. First, look at the Beginner's guides and articles. If you do not have the patience to do that, you really going to have a tough time in this hobby. Next Look at the How to section at left. Look closely. Each section has something in it you MUST do in order to get video from a DVD to a disk you want. I started with the guides and articles to "cut your teeth".
Next you will learn how to "Rip". This means taking the video from a DVD and putting it on your computer as a bunch of files only certain programs can make a movie play for you in its entirety.
Capture. This is how you take your own home movies, TV, VHS, etc. and put it own your computer. We will skip that for now, as we are talking DVDs.
Edit. Not everything on a DVD you will want copied to your archival DVD. Do you really want Spanish subtitles if you only speak English? Do you really want two channel Dolby, when your ears crave six- channel? If your video is from the Besmirched family archives, do we really need that shot of your shoe? You get the idea.
Convert. Now you're cooking with gas. If you are working with DVD video, it is usually shrunk to fit on one DVD, or split to make two. If the family archives are used, then this is where we change it to a type of MPEG your authoring program uses to get you "home".
Authoring. Sometimes this done by a burn program right before burning. It basically changes your files to type your burner needs to make your DVDs, VCDs, SVCD.
Play is self explanatory.
Anyway, to get your DVD to a CD-R, as you may want, you need a DVD drive to read the DVD, and CD burner to make your VCD or SVCD. The burner uses CD-Rs and CD-RWs to make your VCDs and SVCDs. If you own a DVD burner, you can make DVD±Rs and DVD±RWs. Welcome, and hope you enjoy your stay.
P.S. Stay away from Tgpo, I do not trust that kid!Hello.
