I have version 6 which is great but no cropping of overscan and few effects.
I downloaded the trial of version 7 but it crashes when I select Capture. In the FAQ's they mentioned an ATI directory and fle. I do not have either on my system.
I also like to run at 800 x 600. Version 6 will but version 7 requires a higher resolution. This is the first program I have seen that will not run at 800 x 600.

Hi,
There is a update/upgrade avilable for the full version of 7 which solves these problems -

Unfortunately, the upgrade with not work with the trial. Does the upgrade allow one to work in 800x600? I am very interested in this as I would not even consider the product if it did not.
I would only know if the crash problem is fixed on my system with a working trial.
I will just wait until the trial version that works is available to try. I a also considering Movie Studeo which is the same price and seems to have more features.
I am just stuck because I want to try them both and see which I like best and which works best on my system. -
I just did a quick test and - no - VS7, full version with recent patches, will not open in 800 x 600 desktop resolution.
I routinely work in 1024 x 768, so I never even noticed that fact. But now you know for sure. Sorry, it's disappointing news for you. -

Could you describe your issue?
I'll try to help.
Usually, I use the big brother to VideoStudio 7... MediaStudio Pro 7.
VIDEOMAKER MAGAZINE just finished publishing a new review of MediaStudio Pro 7 here:
Title: LEAD ON
"Ulead has been around as long as anyone and consistently comes out with industry-first technology before the other guys, sometimes months in advance."
"MSP7 is a technologically advanced editor (with seventh generation stability) that has a number of killer features that we expect competitors will incorporate (if they want to remain competitive) sometime in the future.

I wish to do everything in one program. It was mentioned that Video Studio 7 includes cropping. I downloaded the manual and did not see it.
Movie Studio 3 has an excellent way to crop as well as pan and zoom. Unfortunately, it does not appear to render in MPEG-2 640x480 with a variable bit rate so I doubt the compression is as good as Video Studio 7.
From what I have seen of the two programs Movie Studio 3 appears superior except in its inability to save in the above format which results in excellent quality and compression. -
Hi all,I just finished a slide/video show for our Fire Dept retirement dinner and at first after upgrading from VS6 I had several problems with crashes and was getting quite upset. After reading in the VideoStudio forum from ulead I read from several people that were having similar problems and it was suggested to upgrade the video card drivers. I was sceptical at first but I did it and that fixed my crash problems. I am running a generic G-Force 4 128mb agp card and have had no problems what so ever since upgrading the drivers. I have found VS7 to be an excellent program for doing the job I needed it to do. As far as the screen resolution I have to run it at 1024x768 which takes a little getting used to on a smaller monitor like a 15" but on my 17" I don't even notice it. Besides VS7 is'nt the only video program that needs a higher than 800x600 resolution to run

Does VS7 support cropping? Someone said it does but I do not see it in the manual. In contrast, MS3 has a great cropping feature but does not have the variety in setting MPEG-2 custom settings.
Thanks -
Neo, yes, cropping is available among the FILTERS selections in VS7.

Hmmm, I think you'd need to sort out the crashing problem before a step-by-step description of how to crop. The crop function in VS7 is just that - tell it how much you want to crop from sides or top and bottom.
And "stretching" the image is a completely different thing to cropping. I think you are probably referring to resizing. Lots of what you want to do can be accomplished with TMPGEnc - for which there's loads of guides on this site.
Maybe VS7 isn't the program you need or want for what you want to ultimately do. I'd recommend reading some guides on TMPGEnc, download the trial or freeware version of that and have a try. Especially if VS7 is giving you so much trouble on your system and you prefer 800 x 600 desktop.
I switch back and forth between 3-6 different programs - depending on what I want to accomplish. -
Maybe I shouldn't have left it at that. I think, like myself, after you've been at this for a while you'll find there is NO WAY to find one single program that does everything you'll want it to do - unless perhaps you have a great deal of money to spend. :c)
The reason I use so many programs is some are more basic and quick and handy for some tasks, while I need to use others for more complicated work.
There's many I'd like to try, but can't afford, and some that just do not work well on my current setup and hardware.
That, of course, is all personal opinion.
I do try to answer any questions with programs I happen to have some experience with, which is why I let you know about the resolution requirement and cropping feature in VS7. No sense spending hard-earned money for something you won't be happy with. -
I agree. I have wasted too much time buying programs that were not at all what I wanted.
I did download and look at TMPGenic. Perhaps I did not study it enough but I like to edit in DV format before rendering. It seemed that the program did not work in DV and was not polished.
When I first bought my Canopus I was trying to work with a number of free programs and DivX. I could never get a high quality render. Then someone reminded me I had spent $300 on a high quality capture device and why was I using free and cheap software? I had a copy of UL VS 6 SE and it is great by comparison.
I will start looking at other software including that by Canopus and Pinnacle.
I have the feeling that the problem is that this is a new area. This is the first time consumers could do this sort of stuff and it is just not mature.
Unfortunately, in a few years I expect HD to have replaced everything we are doing now. I have read thar HD movies require abour 25 GB of storage. We will need new capture devices and new software as well as faster computers with more storage.

I don't even want to think about a few years from now! :cD It took me such a long time to find the handful of programs that work with my combination of hardware and other software.
It's an expensive hobby - that's for sure.
I could never get Pinnacle progs to run for me. Had the same constant crashing that you get with VS7. Now I use VS7 or MediaStudio Pro when I need more oomph and polish, but I stay with TEMPGEnc for straight conversions, resizing, and things like that.
You don't always need to spend more money for a better program. Believe me, I've tried high-priced stuff that was nowhere near as good as TEMPGEnc.
There's limitations in everything, I think. And yes, it's still new enough - for consumers - that even my favorite progs can get bogged down and buggy at times. Like . . . just closing on their own in the middle of my work! :cO The old "SAVE OFTEN" rule applies even more so for video!
Well, good luck with your searches. Seems you aren't getting too discouraged, which is great. It can get frustrating. Just pop back in here and there's bound to be people who have experience with the next thing you try.
