There are many tools to make your drive region free to avoid this problem entirely......

you can find them here in the tools section:

  3. It isn't very smart to keep changing the region on your DVDR drive. You only get 5 changes each time the drive is unlocked, but you can only send back and pay for it to be unlocked 4 times. (25 region changes in total).

The only real way is to send it to the manufacturer and have it unlocked.

Try using AnyDVD for the moment as it should do software based region changes.

  4. i have tried the very dodgey firmware upgrade to 1.33 and luckily it seems to be ok, but still will not read region 2 on power dvd, tried a few region hacks but to no avail.rcp2 seems to be the problem with newer drives. looks like posting it back to mr pioneer. oh i wish i had checked.

  7. locking your drive has NOTHING to do with ripping.
no matter what region your dvd rom is locked on, you can still rip a dvd
    of whatever region you want.
you just cant PLAY it in your dvd.

i had an LG drive that locked out on me, but it still could rip a dvd
no matter what the dvd region was.
i just couldnt watch the dvd using the dvd rom.

rip to the HD and you can even watch it on your computer.

Does this also apply to RCE ? Because my region 1 locked DVD wont read RCE region 2 discs - DVD Decrypter throws a wobbly when attempting to open the DVD.

I do not have a clue but I'm guessing it would probably cost about £30 (about $40), not including postage. Anyway, I wouldn't bother about it too much, as long as you use AnyDVD or something like it you can still rip DVD's. (If you do get it unlocked you will probably want another drive a few months down the line anyway.) Only bother about getting it unlocked if you plan to resell it.

There should be nothing wrong with using another DVD drive to rip (I have always done that so as to not burn out my writer prematurely due to the amount of stopping and starting the disc I do during ripping and normal use) to the hard drive and using the pio for burning.

@VCDHunter I don't know of that problem, but AnyDVD should solve it, or try another tool like Smartripper.

  11. thanks for all replys,i am now using a dvd rom to ripp and the pio to burn with,on my travels i downloaded dvd decrypter this software seems to work even if i use the pio, when it checks the region codeing it says the code is wrong for the drive but says it will force region and gets on with it,try it it does work, but as you say it is possibly better to use a dvd rom to ripp with anyway as they do tend to zipp about a bit.so im now using dvd decrypter, dvd 2 one to take out the crap, and nero 5.10.35 to burn with. so far phonebooth looks a treat. no doubt i will be back here one day for more help, thanks all.

i cant remember if i had a problem with RCE,
but i THINK it should work.

i just cant find a reason it will not.
RCE just wont let you PLAY the movie if your dvd is not locked
    on the right region.

but the dvd rom can understand ANY dvd structure
    (as long as its standart)

so in theory, you shouldnt have a problem riping in to your hard drive.
but i cant say for sure if it will work.

maybe you can try to rip with smart reaper, it sometimes works better.

I often Rip Region 2 DVD's w/ my region 1 drive. DVD Decrypter has to use Brute Force DeCSS instead of the faster IO Key exchange but it usually works. However one time I coudln't do anything, no vulenerable sectors.
