I`m from the U.K. and I was trying to play a region 2 dvd on an American friends philips dvd 711 player. It`s an old machine but in perfect condition besides the fact that I used what appears to be a bad region 2 hack that has left the player locked and with a rolling screen. If this was my player I wouldn`t give a crap but I would like to fix it for my friend. Any help will be greatly appreciated

    Rolling screen constantly ?

I suspect it isn't the region hack, but the fact that you tried to play a PAL R2 and not an NTSC R2 disc. The player is now outputting a PAL signal to a NTSC TV, hence the rolling. If you have the manual (and for some reason American's never seem to have the manual - don't know why), find the instructions for changing the output to NTSC and try to fly blind. Otherwise you may have to pull the power cord from the wall and let it sit for an hour to see if it resets itself.

Failing that, you will have to plug it into a TV that accepts PAL input so you can see the menus and change it back to NTSC.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried putting an NTSC disc into the unit ?

It just tells me that the disc doesn't match the region coding of the player. Looks like I'll be reimbursing the players owner :,-(. Ahh well, better luck next time, I guess.

    Comments:
Bought this player 3 years ago and boy am I glad. This machine is built like a tank. It is located in our 3 year-old's room and it sees daily use and abuse - and I mean abuse! (like climbing on the machine, loading discs halfway etc...)

Never broke down and plays anyting I throw at it - VCDs, SVCDs of various brands (but only if authored to standrd). Very advanced features for its time: plays PAL and NTSC (but no conversion). Component video outs, both optical and coax audio outs, and DTS.

Only drawbacks are no MP3 playback and the remote ergonomics are so-so. Overall was a great buy in 2000, although you can probably find better ones today. For my next player I will definitely consider Philips.
These are some comments on that player. It will play both formats, but only on respective TV. That is PAL on PAL, NTSC on NTSC.
