  1. Tried converting wide screen format DVD into VCD. However, VCD version comes out full screen resulting to elongated objects (faces). Used Smartripper, DVD2AVI and TMPGEnc. Helps is highly appreciated.

    Hi,

Do you want to make it pan&scan or keep it widescreen format?

make sure your not chopping the black letterbox off if you want to keep it widescreen. if you want to make it pan&scan you have to chop the top&bottom Letterbox and chop the sides off to keep the aspect ratio. get a program called DVTools found under tools on vcdhelp.com which tells you the aspect ratio of the resolution which will tell you how much you have to chop off the sides.

    NTSC has a Pan&scan Ratio of 1.47:1
    PAL has a Pan&Scan Ratio of 1.22:1

    Hope this helps

What Turbo Runner suggests might well work but I don't think you have to use yet another program to achieve what you want. I assume you want to make letterboxed VCDs since you are interested in movies and wnat to maintain the aspect ration the director had in mind.
From what you write I assume that you made a so-called anamorphic widescreen VCD which is great as long as you either have a widescreen TV or a regular TV which has a switchable vertical deflection to 19:9 aspect ratio. They are common in Europe but no in the US.
TMPGEnc. has am Aspect Ratio setting on the Video tab in the settings. Unlock that template and set it to 4:3. The encoder shall now resample the anamorphic AVI source to fit in a letterboxed 4:3 frame.
