I have a xvid that is wide screen and I was wondering if there is a way to convert it to a regular screen size?

Sure, by cropping off the sides of the video. Not really recommended, though. The video 'action' may end up at the missing 'sides' of the screen and not be visible. It's better to just view it in wide screen mode, even though it will be a smaller picture. Or use your player settings to adjust or zoom it to a bigger picture.

A better alternative is 'pan and scan'. This is where the video 'frame' is moved back and forth to cover the main part of the action. This is still highly unpopular with most video affectionatos. Here's one view on the subject: http://www.widescreen.org/examples/starwars/index.shtml

But, depending on the format, you can crop with VirtualDub or similar and re-encode with some quality loss if you want.
