I have been trying to convert DVD to SVCD using CCE 2.5 doing 4 passes. It takes around 25 hours to convert a 2 hour movie! I have a P3 with 640mb RAM. As you can see that is very slow.
Will two passes be quicker. Will this halve the time? I do not have a problem with coding around 12 hours so I can leave it overnight and do other things in the morning.
How much time difference is there between 2, 3, 4, and 5 passes. Does each pass takes the same time as the first pass (Say one pass take 8 hours, two 16, three 24 hours and so on)?
Let's face it 25 hours your are wasting a lot of resources, you might as well buy another DVD disk to back up and probably it will be cheaper.
Other thing I would like to know is that if there is a significant difference in quality betweent the different passes?
Thanking you in advance.

Yes, each pass takes as long as the first. Don't forget that CCE first makes a CBR pass to create the VAF file, so 3pass VBR = 4 passes. I normally use 3pass VBR for DVD rips and get excellent quaility.
2pass or 1pass (1pass VBR in CCE = 2pass VBR in TMPGenc) would save a lot of time, how much of a quaility hit you'll take depends on your eye, and the bitrate.
For encodes where the bitrate is 2200 or greater I just use CBR. Some use CBR at 1800+, but I can see the dither in high motion scences.
