Since Subtitle Workshop won't load the whole movie from a VIDEO_TS folder, I thought I would convert the main title to mpeg (using MPEG Streamclip) and try that.

My problem is that the running time is shown as two different values, depending on the source (VOB or MPEG).
DVD Shrink says the title runs..................... 2:18:13
VLC and MPC agree that it's......................... 2:18:13

When converted to MPEG, VLC and MPC say.. 2:18:20
Subtitle Workshop loads it ok and it's............. 2:18:20

So syncing the subs to the MPEG and muxing them to the movie is going to be a problem.

My question is: why an mpeg is turning out longer than the source.
The source is NTSC 'Master and Commander'.

Try vobmerge and join all main movie vobs and then open the vob in subtitle workshop.

You may have stripped out the "drop-frame timing" flag. I have noticed that some .MPG files don't have that flag properly set in the header - it is set in the authoring program, so the .VOBs have it set.

Your best bet will be to use "pulldown.exe" to insert the drop-frame flag into a .M2V file, then reauthor.

The usual symptom of this problem is that subs do not properly sync. Add the flag and they will sync perfectly.

    Thank you Baldrick.
Using vobmerge, the merged file shows two different (wrong) times in VLC and MPC and when loaded into Subtitle Workshop, shows all zeroes for the time.

Previously I used DVD Shrink to save the main title to one VOB so that MPEG Streamclip could convert the whole file to mpeg - the effect was the same in Subtitle Workshop - the large VOB showed zero time..

    @SLK001
    Thank you.
Is that an m2v derived from the mpeg?
I tried pulldown.exe and get a cryptic error message when loading the file.
Tried renaming the file without spaces.
I'll try moving the file to the root drive and see if it goes away.

I believe that pulldown only operates on elementary streams, so you'll have to demux the .M2V file from the .MPG file.

I've never used this GUI, but the program itself requires the "no spaces" to operate. Just enclose the source file with quotes (") and it will work.
