I have had numerous DVDs which due to either scratches or just bad blanks have caused my computer to lockup during the rip process. I have used several rip programs, SmartRipper and DVD2SVCD etc sometimes cleaning helps but not alwaus.
I was attempting to backup 8 Mile and no matter what I tried it crashed my computer on the 3rd VOB file. The movie played fine, just could not copy the third VOB file and therefore backup the DVD.
AS a last attampt I ran DVDSHRINK on the dvd, selecting the smallest % reduction possible, so as to not reduce the quality too much. It then created a mirror (?) of the DVD compressed by the percentage selected. I then ran my usual routines (SmartRipper,DVD2AVI, TempGenc, VCDEasy), on the reduced image rather than the faulty DVD. It worked and the quality looks fine !
Now I can backup even the most scratched DVD out there rather than having to only grab 'new' ones.
Hope this helps anyone who has experienced similar problems.

I'm not sure if I did this correct or not, but I was trying to back up southpark the movie, and no matter what ripper I used (s/ripper, decryptor, dvd shrink and others) when it got to half way thru the 3rd vob it would stop. Some said css problem, others different things. There are no visible scratches on the disk. When I tried to rip the movie in DVD shrink using 5% comrpession, it got to the 3rd vob point and CRASHED My PC. I'm sure it's not dvd shrink's fault as I have used it before without a problem just not with compression.
After I re-installes windows and all the programs I use, I hesitantly tried the disk again using smart ripper. One sise is widescreen which s/ripper cannot even open, and the other is full screen which I was trying to do. I installed Adaptec ASPI v4.71 as before I has win98 ASPI (notsure if it made a difference or not) then ran smart ripper only in the settings changed vob file access from auto to aspi. It got to the bad bit and took about a half hour to finish and showed in red an amount of bad blocks. When looking in DVD2AVI it is all there, just some frames seem to be pixelated or "gliched". I will now encode it and hopefully it should be ok.
Just a note, when playing on a standalone player at the point in the film it freezes and jumps aswell even though no apparent scratches. ???? -

this is a better one
the official version of windows XP aspi layer
and you don't need nero
Where can I get aspi32 drivers for Windows?
Nero's ASPI driver from Ahead Software.
For Windows NT4, Windows 2000 and Windows XP:
Download ftp://ftp6.nero.com/wnaspi32.dll. Copy wnaspi32.dll to the C:Windows System32 folder or to your application directory (no need for reboot).
For Windows 95/98/ME:
Download ftp://ftp6.nero.com/NeroASPIen.exe and read the readme.txt file.
More info can be found on Nero's download page.
Bart says: "This aspi manager from Nero is great, I can really recommend it"...
WHEN U COPY TO WINDOW SYSTEM 32 FOLDER. IF IT ASK U TO OVERWRITE THE OLD WNASPI32.DLL SAY YES -
Multi-PC networked
I use SmartRipper, many DVDs lock up my PC when it hits the area of the disc going from layer 1 to layer 2. My solution is to rip the DVD in file mode, one VOB at a time until i see which VOB it hangs on. I then transfer the same DVD to another PC same OS same ripper and extract the troubled VOB, then compile it back onto my main PC. -
i personally never had problem with smartripper at the layer break
i have had that problem with other ripping programs
then again, i alway rip in file mode
