  1. Hey All,
Been a while since I posted and had a quick question. How and what and in which way do you guys store/file your DVD's? I found that after 3000 + Discs even the slim jewel cases take up too much space. Just looking for suggestions or any other idea' on how I can store my DVD's. If it helps these are mainly back ups and do not necessarily need to be on a shelve or anything they can be in the basement stored. Thanks for the tips.

Alot of people are starting to put their backups on hard drives and storing the originals away. You can get 1TB drives for around $100 these days and I believe I saw a 2TB drive somewhere the other day.

Normally I would suggest compacting down the DVDs to a higher compression format like H.264. But with that many DVDs, it would take quite a bit of time.

Even DVD changers like the Sony 400 disc changers I use won't help much.

Some math: If your DVDs are original full size, figure about 7GB per disc. 7 X 3000 would give you about 21 TB. Not cheap, even with 1 TB drives. If they have been ran though Shrink, about half that, or 14TB, still very large, but possible with 14 one TB drives.

I would probably go with HDD storage if you want all the discs easily accessible. One of my video servers can use up to 15 SATA HDD drives in a full tower case. It's just a regular PC with lots of drive connections. I use two PCI SATA controllers for eight drives, plus the MB controllers. All drives are accesable over the LAN.
