  1. Hello everyone~
I AM VERY NEW TO CONVERSION! I PROMISE I HAVE READ MULTIPLE GUIDES. I've spent days reading through this site before going to the guides.

    1. Help Guide -- AVI...to DVD MPEG2
    2. TMPGEnc Explained V2.0.1.....but not as detailed as
    3. Configuring TMPGEnc for high-quality, DVD-compliant MPEG2 (I'm very green )
    4. How to author & burn a dvd using freeware. Although, I don't think I'm anywhere close to that.
    5. I've even read stuff on DivX with AC3 audio and PAL/NTSC.
    6. I've even looked at KVCD stuff. I actually tried that before moving to the how to dvd guide, but I got error messages for the get go. Maybe I'll try that if someone can offer help.
    7. Finally, I've looked over Funkguy4's guide and will try that next.

Reasoning for listing all of that is to show that I really have been trying to help myself. But I am soooo new at this that I need some extra step-by-step and black and white direction. Thanks so much in advance.

So, I at least didn't get any errors messages with TMPGEnc so far........, but.......

    A. I understand that you can load your file and it will tell you the frame rate. I really like the configuring TMPGEnc for hq "guide", but I need a little further explanation on
    1. Field order
    2. Source aspect ratio
    3. Video arrange method
Is there a program that will tell you these things concerning your source (all of my movies are Divx Kazaa).

Also, I'm at this very moment doing my first conversion, and it's saying that it has 18 HOURS to go. I am a patient person, but gggeeezzzz. I thought most were around 6 or 7 or 8?????????????

Any light would be appreciated. I'm sure I'll have more questions after this conversion is done, so I do thank you in advance. I try to be "wordy" and "specific" in hope that I'll get that in return since I really don't know much. There is alot out there to help you, but because of that, it's hard to put it all together.
    Thanks sooooooo much.

  2. P.S. to the above post.

Is the TMPGEnc something that i can stop and start later picking up where it left off?

  4. 1) I would refrain from mentioning Kazaa, people tend to frown on piracy.

    2) Field order is for interlaced video. A or B just means which of the 2 fields get drawn first. If you source is interlaced TMPGEnc will detect which is first.

    3) Source Aspect Ratio is for the source video. 16:9(Widescreen) DVD vs 4:3 (Full screen) DVD/VHS/TV. So you use this to tell TMPGEnc weather the source is Full Screen or Widescreen. Basicly if you do the wron one you will get squished/scretched output.

Time to encode... There are MANY factors that effect...affect(Stupid Engrish) the how long it will take. I have a 1.6Ghz 512MB and I tend to have a 2:1 ratio for encoding, so a 2 hour movie tends to take me about 4 hours to encode.

  5. Thanx Ejoc~
I will keep that in mind. Promise.

Is there someway where I can tell these different things of my source file?

What about starting and stoping TMPGEnc? If stopped, will it start where it left off?

Also, can you tell me anything about audio extraction. I'm getting from others, that I have to do more than save wav in Virtualdub (like run through another program), but I don't have very good direction.

Thanks so much. You're awesome for answering!

  6. If an encode in TMPGENc is stopped it will not pick up where it left off, however, if you know the exact location in the video file where it stopped, you can start another encoding session with what is left, then when both pieces are done, merge them together.

  7. Jakers,

You probably have a Divx (MPEG-4) file. That could be why you are getting 18 hours to encode. Check out this thread, there are some of the same problems going on here

  8. You only have to run programs on the audio if its in a format that TMPGEnc wont read basicly. DVD audio needs to be in 48kHz and VCD/CVD/SVCD need to be in 44.1kHz. But i feed TMPGEnc 48kHz WAV files all the time for making CVD's/SVCD's.

If you hit the stop button on TMPGEnc and dont answer the popup window you can do other things, then when you want to encode again just hit 'No' Thats what i do when I want to play Counter-Strike while in the middle of an encoding :P

I dont use it, but I hear the program GSpot is good for identifying info about video. Since I'm only encoding AVi's I've captured from VHS or DVD's I'm backing-up, I dont need to use any software to identify them.

  9. Thanks guys. I'm going to try to author and burn now with the freeware guide. I'll probably have more questions.

    You're all wonderful.
