I just recently captured video from my new cannon GL2 camcorder and I want to eventually compress the video to a more reasonable size instead of the current 7GB so that i can tranfer it via ftp to a few friends.
First is there a codec that is recommended for allowing me to view dv with virtaldub and second what is a good method to compress this large file.

    Thanks in advance,

  2. There are two types of DV codec, type1 and type2. Vdub will only accept one of these types (I think its type 2) so you need to convert it. I think you can find a DV converter in the tools section.

  3. Firstly, you need a VFW DV codec/driver. I recommend the Panasonic one as it works reasonably well (and you can both write and read to to it for free).

And, it's "Type 2" DV that VirtualDub can read (as long as you have a VFW DV codec).

Relevant software (codec and converter) can be found here: http://users.tpg.com.au/mtam/software.htm

Thanks for the good advice fellas. I used the panasonic codec and now i can use avisynth and virtual dub to edit the video. I'm thinking of converting the video to DVD for family viewing and to Divx for transmitting via the web. What is a good bitrate to use when compressing to divx also i want to know is DV interlaced or progressive and should i use zigzag or the other type of scanning order with CCE?

    Thanks in advance,
