I think you are meaning what power of PSU to buy. If that is it, a 300 Watt should do OK.
-
It also depends on what peripherals you plan on adding or already have. If you're going to have a high end video card and lots of hard drives and burners, then I would go a little higher. You can never go wrong with more power, in my opinion. A higher wattage PSU won't under work, but a lesser wattage PSU can definitely be overworked.

all gateway computers come with little power supplies.
my pent 4 has a 150watt power supply
gateway say in real world usage
that should be enough -

gateway doesn't need as much power as a real computer.
it has low quality parts and on board stuff.
150w does seem low though.
a p4 should have at least 300w.more if you have alot of stuff hooked up.

Don't doubt Vance on the wattage of his Gateway.
I just replaced PSU on an e-machine, was a 120 watt, and an HP, was a 100 watt.
They DO use the lowest possible on an OEM, saves a buck.
They also make them for average users, who probably will never go even so far as upgrading the sound card, let alone adding drives, HD or opticals.
My own all go 400 or more, Antecs. -

Boy, if this ain't a silly one.
A 150 is running fine for a year and a half, and someone comes in and says, well, it's gonna break, your mobo's no good, neither is the rest of that onboard crap.
Hell, if you ain't into Doom, or whatever the G card intensive game is these days, who needs a300 buck, 50 watt card?
Long as it ain't broke, don't fix it. PSU's are cheap enough to replace, if, and when, it burns out.
I have machines 8 years old that the PSU is still good in.
Don't sweat it. -
all that on a 150watt? respect..
Upping it to a 300 or 350w can't hurt much if there's space though - wont destroy your wallet. Allegedly it doesnt use any more mains power, just doesnt waste as much. Had a bunch of problems with my computer after adding the third hard disc, decided to add new PSU (350 i think, and not all that expensive) after a new CPU fan didn't fix, did a world of good and no trouble since - and the old 230w looked decidedly burnt out.
Excess power won't do much harm; a power deficit will. Just like in your car-= She sez there's ants in the carpet, dirty little monsters! =-
Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more! -
Eddy,
Vance hasn't said if he has an ATX or a Micro ATX. The last 2, 100 and a 120, were Micro's, very small, hard to get higher wattages, I think I put in 150's but not sure.
I'm pretty sure the extra windings do use more mains power, even at idle, but probably not that much.
A 250 I just looked at draws 6 amps/115 volts, US, 3 amps/250 volt you ( I think Britian uses 250V, 50 cycle, no? )
A 300 draws 8 amps/4 amps, so 1000 watts, either way, 30% efficiency, 300 watts output.
You always have losses when you use a transformer, step-up, or step-down, and we have 3 separate sets of windings, 3.3, 5 and 12 volts..
By the same token, the 100 and 120 Micro's both draw 3/1.5 amps, so they're slightly less efficient than the ATX's I have out of the box. Or else they're a little more conservatively rated.
Still, I like hefty power supplies, myself, but if I buy a box with a 300, I don't automatically throw it out and buy a 500. Hell, if it goes, replace it, if not, just wait, it may last longer than you want it to.
Cheers
