Hello. My Apex AD1500 plays some, not all, but most VCD's weird.
It will play the video for a certain amount of time totally fine, then the VIDEO will be almost like a jerky fastforward motion for about 15-30 seconds, while the AUDIO remains steady, afterwards the video somehow aligns itself with the audio. very weird.
Whats weirder is that not all VCDs do it.
Even wierder is that my Toshiba player plays them fine.

here are the variable i have narrowed it down to.
-Sometimes I use Nero, others I used Roxio EZ CD Creator 5
-I have always used TMPGEnc to encode, but the settings i change are the VBV Buffer size (i dont think this si it), sometimes 40, sometimes 0. I also have changed the framerate (very possibley affecting it), the motion search percison, i use Normal, sometimes i use high/low (also dont think this is it). I also change the Feild order, from Bottom Field First (fieldB) to Top Field First (field A). I change these back and forth, trying to determine if they affected it, i cannot conlcude.

    can someone please help
the player plays DVDs fine, just not Xvcd, and VCD. I always have people over and play movies, it ruins the movie if the video is skewed etc.

    thank you for your time

You should always leave the VBV buffer size at 0 in TMPgenc. That is the automatic setting. Get the value wrong, and you can make your disc unplayable. None of the other settings you mentioned should cause this type of problem. Have you considered media? The fact that one player plays them all without issue (I'm assuming they are all standard VCD?), while the other chokes could indicate a media problem. If your burn speed is too high for the media, or you just have a bad batch of discs, you could get something like this. Some players are also more forgiving than others when it comes to mastering errors. I've even seen players that would choke on a particular color of CD-R. This doesn't seem to be as much of an issue with newer players.

Field order will just make your video somewhat jerky on pans/fast motion if you get it wrong.

Changing the Motion search precision setting affects how well the encoder looks for motion from frame to frame. It could cause losss of quality for the faster settings, but it shouldn't cause a speedup of the video.

The framerate setting is consistant throughout the entire video, and wouldn't change for just a few frames. This change would also be evident on both players, not just one, so you can count this one out.

This sounds silly, but did you chaeck and make sure some of the VCD's aren't PAL? A lot of downloaded VCD's are PAL, especially Anime.

I would suggest you get an MPEG that works, and one that doesn't. Pull the properties with MPEG Properties. I would also look at it with Bitrate Viewer. I wonder if the bitrate is spiking? Are they all VCD, or are they just various different types (vcd/cvd/svcd/xvcd)?

Sorry Ennis, I've been out on vacation. You can try MPEG Properties or AVICodec. They will both report properties on your MPEG. You can find them both in the TOOLS section.

    Mpeg Properties: http://www.medialab.se/mpgp_100.zip
    AVICodec: http://avicodec.duby.info/
