    Zidane Tribal,
Best place to start is by clicking on the links to the left of this forum. There are good guides for beginners in the "How To" section. This is a pretty good place to start..

the super basic - you are going to need a capture device. You can compare notes on them in the Capture Cards section at left.

Once you have decided on a capture card, you will need capture software. If you check in the Tools section, under Capture, you will find reviews, links and descriptions. Many people like VirtualDub. I like Virtual VCR and iuVCR myself.

Your capture card and setup (and your temperment!) will determine whether you should capture in avi and convert, or capture direct to mpeg. If your hardware will support it, and if it gives you acceptable quality, there is nothing wrong with capturing to mpeg. But if your card doesn't capture to mpeg well, you may find better quality by capturing to an avi and converting to mpeg after the fact.

Poke around in the guides a bit, and when you have some more questions, come on back and post.
