  1. Just want to know others opinion for which program they recommend when encoding VHS to SVCD, TMPG or CCE2.5

  2. if your source tape is ultra clean (or your capture is great_to_awesome looking)go cce.

if not , your best bet is tmpgenc, more plugins, tool, filterz, more flexibility.

    Stick to 12 or 12A

You may use VirtualDub/ AVIsynth filters, if you want to use CCE for VHS2SVCD conversions. The setup might be more complicated than TMPG, but at low bitrates it is worth a try. If all what you want is a plain encode (i.e. open source and hit encode), then use TMPG @ high bitrates.

The unofficial english TMPG site closed yesterday. At the official TMPG homepage is written the following:
"We do not permit re-distribution of any version, especially version beta12x or older at any website."
But I am pretty sure, you will still find it if you search the web. On the other hand I don't think, that the old beta's 11, 12 or 12a are better than the latest beta. I did not test v.2.0 yet.

    Well, ask me:
Beta 12j is the same as Beta 2.0
Faster. with better colors, but for some strange reason, the quality ain't good. Blocks all over.
Beta 12H and beta 12 are better.
I encoded several time the same clip with the same template, and I am between 12 and 12H. For Movies, I use 12 (better VBR, smaller files). For video clips, I use 12H (better colours, some blocks which you can eliminate with high bitrates)
Newer versions have blocks. Between versions suck...
