    hi there

    ive rripped some standard mpges from a dvd using tmpg enc 4 express and then using windows movie maker ive then added a wav soundtrack and the resulting video is very jerky.

    Im assuming that this is likely to be something to do with the settings that i set for ripping

    can anyone advise me what the issues might be?

    Were these commercial discs, or home made ?
    What did you do to them in tmpgenc ?
    What did you do to them in WMM ?

    If you;

    1. Didn't rip the DVD correctly
    2. Re-encoded with the wrong frame rate
    3. Used a weirdly convoluted method to edit some videos

    then you can get unpredictable results

    i used tmpg see seetings below and then in wwm - i added music and titles and converted to dv-avi file which i then reencoded and used the tmpg author to created dvd

    see screenshot of settings in tmpg which is what i used to rip from dvd in first instance

    Field mismatch. Default DVD video is usually top field first (when interlaced), while DV-AVI is bottom field first. You are doing a lot of encoding steps, from DVD to DV-AVI and back to DVD, and you are introducing errors along the way. Not a good deal.

    WMM is about the lowest you go editing wise. Pretty much all sources outside standard DV AVI and WMV require re-encoding before you can edit them. No conducive to a quality outcome.

    Agree with Guns1inger. If the client is going to edit the footage, why are you encoding it anyway? WMM is one of the worst possible tools you could use to prep footage for DVD. And a reencode with TMPGEnc is not only unnecessary, but it degrades the footage quality.

    If the original source format is DVD, let the client import the files directly from disc, then demux the mpeg-2 stream out of the .vob files (recommend PGC Demux ) WITHOUT reencoding. From there, an MPEG-2 editor (like MPEG Video Wizard) can be used to cut the footage. And finally, any decent DVD Authoring program (plenty in the Tools section of this site) can create a DVD-compliant file that you can burn to disc with Imgburn.
