  1. are all capture software created equal?
I am capturing DV off a camcorder thru ieee1394 to an avi file.
Is this step pretty much fool-proof or do different software give differnt quality capture?
I have the native win XP program, as well as nerovision and intervideo wincoder for capture.
Should I worry much about this step?
    thanks

is a rose is a rose is a rose ?

you are not capturing but transfering .. the compression is already done ..

what you are doing is fine ..

  3. He's right, don't worry about it. The only thing that could compromise quality is what you use to transfer the video (component, coax. cable, s-video, firewire, etc.).
If everything is infinite then nothing is definite.

  4. thanks guys. that's good news.
As far as the connection goes, it's ieee1394 wire. Just a cheap one from BB, not glod plated or anything
Also I have some old 8mm tapes which I am converting by connecting the 8mm camcorder to the analog-in jack of the DV camcorder and then firewire to the PC, convert on the fly...

I'd honestly like to find the person that first called this capturing so I can beat the tar out of him. He doesn't know how much confusion he has caused. If it's a her, I'll let the wife do the honors.

It is no more a capture than me "capturing" data from a floppy disk.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

Firewire is digital. it either transfers perfectly
    of completely fails. No degradation.

  7. Besides getting gold-plating, that's the best way I could think of transferring your films.

Software usually won't matter unless it's not working properly.
