what do you mean by "not that great" are these mpg files you are burning or avi? if your having nero make the vcd from an avi then that is the problem there. describe what is not great, remember vcd is not going to be even close to dvd quality.

  3. i jus needed to play like it is on the computer

    problems:
-sometimes it shows boxes and it comes up really frequently
    (like every second)
-there r freezes...where the sound plays but the video freezes...then it goes to another screen like 7 seconds later...

sounds like you may be talking about blocking artifacts - common for vcd to some extent, the skipping could be related to bad media, dvd player, or combination.

answer whether this was an mpg or avi file?

  5. da first one w/ the boxes it was directly from avi using nero...the 2nd one w/ the freezes i used TMPGEnc first and made it into a .mpg (MPEG-1)

and i also read dat writing in 4x or less will be better then 8x or higher (?)

also, im using Mintek DVD-1600 to play the vcd...i got it for free and i guess its a pretty cheap player dat averages $50 now dat i checked it...i think dat can be the problem...but after reading several reviews...it can play VCDs pretty well i guess...despite dat...i had really old VCDs dat i burnt w/ fireburner using .cue and .bin files and it played jus like it was on the computer.

  6. I use nero for authoring and burning my VCD's and have never had a problem (do not use nero to encode). If you want to try something else try VCDeasy, it is free and highly recommended.

Only v.1.1.5.2 of VCDeasy is free! The rest have been expired or will be expired after v.1.1.5.2.

Take a quick look at this link, some important info about NERO.

  9. i've personally authored thousands of (S)VCD discs and only get those blocks rarely...

usually it's a fluke with the media/burn and if i reburn the same file, the blocks will go away.

    -------

however, it sounds like you could be burning too fast. try burning at 4X max.

also, make sure your VCD player supports CD-R discs....i'm assuming it does, but if you have an old player, it may not.

as pointed out previously, it could just be the media...make sure you take care of the media...no dust, dirt, sunlight, scratches..etc...
