Hi,
I have read alot of posts and guides but nothing pertaines to my problem. Please help. I am converting avi files downloaded from the internet to VCD format. This is what I start out with:
Audio Format: MPEG Layer-3 23kBit/s 22,050 Hz Mono
Video Format: 720 X 540 24 Bits 10 Frames/sec DivX codec
I am using VirtualDub to extract the audio and then Tmpengc for the conversion. I use Nero for my burning.
I do not have a problem converting or burning. But, when I play the video in my standalone DVD player the video is blurry. Is it because the resolution is so different? Can I correct this?
There is no movement on the screen. The videos are computer graphic software video tutorials. The text is blurry.
I was wondering if I could download the videos (before and after conversion) so someone could take a look at what I am doing and/or doing wrong.
Thanks in advance

I have bad news for you. You will not achieve sharp readable text in VCD format. As you rightly say, the resolution is just too low.
Perhaps you could try an X-VCD. I suggest trying higher resolutions sich as 320*480 (CVD standard) or 720*480 (DVD standard). Due to the low movement onscreen bitrate should not be a problem. Test a sample or two to see if you can play them on your DVD player.
If these are to be distributed, then non-standard like this is not a good idea. In that case investigate SVCD or DVD. -
Thanks for the reply bugster but there is a problem. I have to stay with VCD. My standalone DVD player will not recognize SVCD and I do not have a DVD burner yet. When you talk about changing the resolution, how do I do that because VCD has to be 352 X 288. Am I able to change this?
One other question. I thought that I read somewhere that there is a way to get a standalone DVD player that only recognizes VCD to recognize SVCD. Is this true? If so, could you point me in the right direction? I've searched with no results.
Thanks

If you change the resolution, it will become what is know as a XVCD. Basically this means its almost VCD standard, but some aspect is out of spec. As to wether it will play in any particular make or model of DVD player, the only reliable way to find out is to try it.
As to making a VCD only player handle SVCD's, this is what is commonly referred to as the 'header trick'. Basically it means taking and SVCD compliant mpeg and changing the file header to that of a VCD compliant mpeg. Do a forum search for it, theres loads of info about it. Again, as to wether your DVD player will handle this, well, see above. -
Thanks again bugster. I appreciate the help and all the other information that dvdrhelp.com has given me. I am happy with the VCD's that I can produce but, now I just have to tweak them a little.
Thanks for the info,
