I have the same problem in XP. Once you remove a driver, my XP does not allow installation of another driver for the same device.

Fortunately, I have dual boot. Absolutely no such problems with Win 98 SE.

I am also looking for a solution short of re-installation for XP

  5. This most usually occurs when there is a driver conflict of some kind.

Right click on My Computer, open up Properties, and go to the Hardware tab. Then go do Device Manager and check your Sound, video and game controllers. Make sure everything there has an active icon (the speaker icon) with no red or yellow in it. Also make sure there are no "unknown devices" listed. If either is true (red/yellow, or unknown devices) delete the offending device and reboot. XP should then correctly handle things.

    Tried all that-does not help.
To check whether sound driver was problem deleted that- can't install that back-same screen. Checked all security settings though gpedit.msc-no luck.
Seems deleting driver is unacceptable to XP.
