  1. I want to copy a VHS tape in SVCD quality, i have a ATI TV Turner card i tried to set it up in the SVCD Standards but i can not change the 240 size will that make the SVCD look bad? 480X240 is the closet i can get to the SVCD Standards.

Is SVCD about the same quality as VHS?

  2. That is very odd. I suspect the problem is with your software. What program are you using to capture? You might want to try Virtual Dub, AVI_IO, iuVCR or neoDVD.

Caputuring at ???x240 only captures 1/2 the lines (ie. one field) and does result in a noticable quaility difference vs. ???x480.

There is no 'best' way to do this. But the general rule of thumb seems to be to capture uncompressed video at the highest resolution (up to 720x480) and bitrate you system supports. Edit as necessary. Then encode the video down to a lower resolution and/or bitrate. [actually most seem to capture with the huffyuv codec in VDub].

I have this problem with my ATi TV Wonder card and VirtualDub. I did not have the problem when I was using Windows98SE but once I upgraded to Windows2000 I could no longer capture at 640x480 or 480x480 with VDub...so I captured at 640x240 and I was really dissappointed....

I now capture with VirtualVCR and I have no problems...audio stays in perfect synch and I have little frame drops....check the TOOLS section here to download it. It's free....

  4. I'm just using the software that came with the ATI TV Tuner. I'm using XP.
Guess i will try a differant program to capture with.

  5. Sounds like your drivers don't support that resolution. Download WDM acquisition drivers here and you'll be able to capture at pretty much any reolution. It worked for me... I couldn't capture at 480 x 480 resolution until I installed these drivers; now I can capture at that resolution with VirtualDub.

  6. Are you still having issues with capping at above the 240 lines AFTER you have performed a search of this site for words like "ATI, tv tuner, 240 lines" and after you reviewed the guides on here that talk specifically about the problem and the easy way to correct it.

Please post back if you are still having issues after trying all of the guides and doing some simple searches and I will see what I can do to help you out.

If it's a TV Wonder, you can only get higher the Xx240 by using the generic brooktree drivers. If it's an All-In-Wonder 128 you are out of luck.

352x480 is what you need from VHS tape to DVD 1/2, so 480x480 is fine for SVCD.
