Is there anyway to tell if a source DVD Disc has been ripped or backed up by reading/looking at the source Disc?

If the movie was a theatrical release and the disk doesn't have a silkscreen label then most likely it is a backup.

Pretty easy to tell in many cases -- if the back is purple or deep blue it almost surely is a rip. Commercial disks are pressed and have a very different backing than DVDR (in some cases the backing may be green, but a comparison with a commercial disk should reveal the differences).

is the question "how can I tell if I have an original source disc, or a backed-up source disc?"
or is the question "if I back up a disc, is there any way someone can tell I backed up that disc?"
the answer to the second question is no.
the answer to the first was covered in previous posts.- housepig

Its was the second, can you tell from a source disc if it has been ripped or backed up. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks to all for the responses

So yes, you can rent a movie from your local video library, rip it to make your own copy and they won't be able to tell when you take it back.
(Not that anyone using this forum would even consider doing such a thing.....) -
The original question is sort of like, "Can anyone tell if a disk has been played?" That's essentially all you're doing with the disk when ripping, although at a higher speed if your drive is capable.

I know this thread will be frowned upon due to the direction it has taken.......but the my springer thought for the day is.....everyone should love people who back up rented movies......they still get hired!....and in Australia at least, since burners have finally started taking off, the cost of original dvd movies has strangley started to go down.....I know this is overly simplified and completely off thread, but Im short of time and felt like typing it. Bottom line is, if I like the movie enough, and it is value for money, I'll buy it, eg Fellowship of the ring box set....its about the only dvd with extras where Ive sat down and watched all of the bonus material.

Prison is not good. Freedom is good. I know! Why ask such a silly question in the first place. Are you worried that the FBI might come and take a dress from your closet and check it for DNA?

Sorry for the new person question. I was just
concerned that making a backup or "ripping" as I see it called hear
had any effect on the quality of the original. I did looked through the
"read first questions". Sorry for the question
