ok i know that mpeg 5.1 surround sound is very incompatible, but i was wondering what if i convert only the video and i keep the audio from the source file. like i use DVD2SVCD and i have the option to use Source Audio. will this work on many dvd players if i burn it as a CVD on a CD-R?

No,the firmware of your DVD player controls it. VCD/SVCD doesn't support ac3 audio, mpeg only. CVD is a low resolution SVCD.

If its on CDR then it depends what you author it as and the capabilities of your player as to wether it will work. If you author it as a Mini DVD, AC3 audio is valid. If your player can handle this format (not many can) then great. If you author it as X(S)VCD, then no, Ac3 audio will not work.

ac3 audio simply won't work on an SVCD. I have tried burning an SVCD/MPG with ac3 on a DVD-R. Even while my DVD player supported playback of raw mpeg it would not play ac3 audio. If you want ac3 audio than the other posters suggestion of a miniDVD will work but as he pointed out very very few DVD players support miniDVD.
