  1. I have for some time quite successfully made XVCD's.
I decided on a whim to give XSVCD's a try.

Before I commit to burning cd's, I decided to do some test clips.
I encoded 2 identical parts of a movie a ran them simutaneously and I have to be honest in saying that i don't see a damn bit of difference.
Having not burned anything yet, I'm wondering if the closeness in quality will be the same on my DVD player...
    or
Due to the difference in the DPI etc , is it fair to say that comparing it on a computer screen is not a true resemblance of how they will show on the TV ?

Put them on an RW and show them on the larger screen, you will see a difference!

  3. VCD and SVCD are standards. xVCD and xSVCD can be anything. You didn't tell us what settings you are using so it's really hard to say. When you compare VCD to SVCD thou SVCD wins, hands down. It's superior resolution and bitrate makes SVCD the winner.

However, a xVCD at 480x480 with video at 2520kbit/s will look exactly the same as a SVCD. With the (possible) advantage that more standalones support (x)VCDs than SVCDs.

Personally I think for more DVD backups or VHS/TV captures the CVD resolution of 352x480 is best (gives good bitrate/pixel). And once you get a DVDR (or BluRay ) all of this becomes less important...

I assumed VCD resolution at a non-standard (higher?) bitrate, but Vejita-sama is right.
