  1. Is it possible to trim off the end of an mpg2 stream with the Vdub mod using 'direct stream copy'?

This is for putting two CVD disks onto a single DVD and trimming off the overlap of the movie between the disks.
    Happy to be here.

Why not use TmpGenc, mpeg tools, merge and cut option.

  3. Merge and Cut in TMPG is glitchy. The sound usually suffers (there's silence at the point of merging or cutting)

I'm looking for a way to get a clean cut for picture and sound. And yeah I'm cheap and don't want to pay for a good MPG cutter/editor.

    Thanks though.
    Happy to be here.

You can trim/split mpeg-2 files using that special version of vd, but from my [limited] testing the sound goes async quickly. Then again, I was outputting a hufyuv avi or frameserving to tmpgenc not trying to go direct copy.

Calling tmpgenc's 'merge & cut' function glitchy is an understatement. Trying to get precise with an mpeg-2 gets an app crash very quickly. But tmpgenc is cheap and fairly quick (I'm trying to find a >good< mpeg-2 editor now but I'm not having much luck).

As far as I know, no, you cannot edit MPG (1 or 2) in *any* version of VDub. Various versions will read MPG, but they will not write back out the edit to MPG. You can only re-encode to AVI, or, of course, frameserve to TMPGEnc where you can re-encode to MPG.

If you are looking to trim without doing a full re-encode (which will lead to a quality loss) then I don't think VDub is the answer. I wish there was a mod that could do direct stream copy of MPG, and if anyone knows of one, please let me know.

MPGTX (mpgtx.sourceforge.net) does a decent job. It's a command-line process though, so be sure to spend time reading that page on usage.

Worked fine for me the one time I had a TMPGenc error. Though it took a while to understand.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.
