  1. Hi there,

I know that a RAID-0 array increases the drive's speed, thus reducing the dropped frames while capturing. I have one question however : How does the on-board RAID controller in Abit KH7II perform, compared to those ATA 100 Raid controllers by Promise ?

    Thx in advance.

  2. In theory, all other things - BIOS, drivers, etc. - being equal, the on-board HPT-370 RAID controller on the ABIT board should perform similarly to the add-on RAID cards that also use the HPT-370 ASIC, like the Iwill SIDE-RAID 100. Storage Review did a benchmark putting the SIDE-RAID 100 up against the Adaptec 1200A card, which also uses the HPT-370 ASIC, but uses different BIOSes and drivers. They also included data for both the AMI MegaRAID IDE-100 and the Promise FastTrak 100.

The SIDE-RAID 100 generally performed on par to all but the Adaptec card, which trailed the pack by 1-3%, in RAID 0 as far as transfer rates. But not in tests like WinBench's Business Disk or High-End Disk WinMarks - though there is some debate that these tests are dated and/or that manufacturers can customize drivers and firmware to perform well on these tests.

You can read the whole review here StorageReview.com.

Based on these data from SR, I wouldn't think that buying an add-on card would be justified. Of course, after the HPT-366 debacle on my ABIT BP-6 ultimately got swept under the rug, when I hear "High Point Tech", I head for the hills...
