How does one convert a RAID 5 system to RAID 1 without reinstalling any thing?

one doesn't...you are talking about striped vs. mirrored arrangements.

think of it like this...you can convert those jeans to cut-offs but you can't turn them into silk boxers.

    You don't directly.

You copy the data (either to backup HD/CDR/DVDR/BDR/tape--for restore after conversion, or to replacement HD)

If you backup, you could convert: erase...repartition...reformat as newer RAID 5 or 6 or 5+0 or 1+0, etc.

If replacement, you could leave the RAID 5 alone and use new material on it.

Your're stuck with the same size disks (partition on the disk), but not the same number of disks, if it's a true RAID card

You can keep adding disks to your RAID, thus adding more storage.
Again this is dependent on your RAID controller. A true RAID controller can do it. but most low end onboard versions don't. Check to see what yours can do.
