I realize the cendyne x05 is the same as the Pioneer 105 but I was curious as top whether it will take the upgraded firmware and burn at 2x?

Yes, the burners are the same. I have the Cendyne drive and on the label it shows Pioneer dvr-105, and it uses the exact same firmware. I have been burning 1X media at 2X speeds since the newest special firmware.....

I just got my Cendyne DVR-105 two weeks ago. Few days later upgraded to new formware version 1.30 and it works like a charm. In reality Cendyne is a Pioneer 105 drive..(shows up in my windows). Since the upgrade have been burning my Ritek dvd-r ar 2x. Do not use Princo dvd-r, they do not work on all standalone dvd players.
