I read the guide for creating high quality DVD compliant mpeg-2 files and found it to be very enlightning. But I have one question. When I use my miniDV camcorder to digitize VHS-C tape is the resultant digital video considered to be DV (bottom field first) or analog (top field first)?

    Thanks in advance.

BJ_M. Appreciate the response but one question almost always creates another.

I understand (I think) that any video fed to the computer from a miniDV camcorder is DV (bottom field first) regardless of the original video source. But TMPGEnc always deals with digital video. Under what condition can input video be considered analog?

Analog would be from an analog source, like broadcast, VHS, coax, composite, etc.

DJRumpy and BJ_M. My question concerned the issue where I digitized VHS-C with a miniDV camcorder. Is the resultant video DV or analog? You have given me conflicting answers. Please clarify. Thanks again.

When you copied the analog VHS to you MiniDV camcorder, it converted it to DV. Now when you transfer it to PC, it is captured to DV AVI. DV AVI is always bottom field first.

    Mabe that helps more

Yup. When you captured it to DV, you converted the analog to digital. Your original source was analog. All DV is bottom field first, so capturing using DV, you essentially converted it to bottom field first.
