Hey people, this is my first time to post on this forum, although I've been browsing the site for some time now. Awesome place!
I have a problem: I'm trying to convert a DivX video to SVCD. I followed one of the guides here to the word (the one by LeeBear I think) and when I finally popped the SVCD in, the motion of the video was kind of stuttery or jittery. It's like it has slowdown; the video would play normally for half a second then slowdown to a freeze and then continue on again.
I thought it was the SVCD itself or my DVD player. However, when I checked the mpg file, it had the same problem. The audio is in sync and all, but the video, like I said, had brief pauses. The software tools I was using: VirtualDUB, TMPEGEnc, DVD2SVCD and VCDEasy.
I tried all kinds of solutions and combinations (i.e. changing field order, aspect ratios, quality, bitrate, variable vs. constant, w/ audio, w/o audio, doing audio seperately) and I still have the problem. I tried taking my DivX settings down to default 'low quality' but no luck. The thing is the DivX plays awesome in both WMP and DivX player.
What could be causing this? Could a CODEC be causing this? Do I need to have a specific CODEC for this task?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

could be the burn rate, i only burn vcd's at 4 speed, somehow it makes things easier and better and my normal encoding time is arounf 6 hours plus

Hi all,
I was just about to post about exactly the same thing.
First of all, I know the ultimate answer to this question is that using a better source for VCD encoding would produce a better result. DivX to VCD/MPEG1 is never going to give as good as a result as a DVD-rip etc..
However, I've noticed exactly the same thing - if I frameserve from vDub to TMPGEnc to convert a DivX to VCD format, I get a decent picture (not perfect, but acceptable), audio in sync, but a 'stuttering' effect in the video playback.
It's as if the framerate modulates up and down.
Does anyone have any pearls of wisdom to share on this one?
As dashrendar said, the original DivX plays fine, but the VCD does not seem to play at a constant framerate (despite the audio being in sync as we've said.)
Any advice anyone?
cheers,
mcdruid.
PS. I always burn at the lowest speed Nero will allow (I can't remember if it's 4x or 8x), and I use the Noise filter in TMPGEnc, but not the 'High Quality' mode, as the increase in encoding time doesn't seem to be reflected in quality in the end result. -
You may think my solution is daft.....but try it out...it works perfectly for me.
I would hazzard a guess that you are using DivX movies with a framerate of 23.976fps (use virtualdub to find this out....file/file information).
Well I had exactly the same problem with jerking video as you do...until I started converting all my movies to 25fps before encoding in PAL format...then they played nice and smooth.
You first need to change the framerate of the video to 25fps....use virtualdub for this...set the audio tab to "no audio" and under video tab select "direct stream copy" and click "change frame rate" and alter it to 25....then click "file" and save out the new avi...call it something like "movie"25.avi
Now you'll find that the new 25fps video is a few minutes shorter than the original movie...so you have to stretch the audio to match...follow the instructions i give in this post to do this:
https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=155689
Then when you have a 25fps video and an audio source to match, just use these sources in TMPGenc with the default settings using the PAL template (or select PAL if using the wizzard).
You may think this is a lot of hassle...but when you've done it a few times it probably takes about an extra 30 mins to do the preparation...well worth it.
Try it....you might be pleasantly surprised! -
Dunno where Dashrendar is from...but if from the US then first check to see if your TV and DVD player is compatible with PAL discs before following my suggestions above.
TheDruid.....as you live in the UK then I would DEFFO suggest trying my method, as PAL is of course our standard format here. -
thanks mate - that sounds pretty likely to fix the problem.
time & disc-space allowing, I'll try that next time I do one of these conversions.
I'll post back here with the results.
Thanks again for such a quick response.
cheers,

No probs....I'll be interested to know if it works for you...so let me know when you've tried it
Actually I'm dead sure it will work
