  1. My Samsung cheap CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive at works even rips at 5-6x and this $350 drive only rips at 2x

    System config:
    P4 2.4Ghz (running at 2.8Ghz)
    ASUS P4PE mobo
    Win XP Pro

I don't think there is anything wrong with your drive. But, why would you want to rip with the Sony anyway???

Use the DVD-ROM drive to rip as it cuts down on the wear and tear on the Sony.

I would assume that most DVD writers can't rip as fast as normal DVD-ROM drives, but I am not sure of this.
    Use what works for you...

  3. the firmware on all dvd-recordable drives seems to limit the rip speeds to 2x. the pioneer currently has a firmware hack which removes the limit, and I'm hoping the sony will soon too!
