I'm still having problems getting TMPGEnc to work again after
my bi-annual format and clean install of the OS. Prior to this
it worked perfectly without a hint of crashing. Now I can't get
it to encode any .avi movie.

Once I load any movie into TMPGEnc it crashes without any
warning. This happens all the time with the Plus version, and
most of the time with the Free version. The settings under the
VFAPI-plugin tab have been changed so many times, I can't for
the life of me remember the defaults...lol

I was told its probably the source (movie) that has the problem,
but I can't imagine all of the movies having bad frames. Plus,
I've given the movies to a couple of friends and they are able
to encode the movies without a hitch.

I've been instructed that it might be a problem with the codecs
installed on this system. That maybe I've got to many installed,
    or somehow installed incorrectly.

So my question is, how do I remove all codecs and start over?
Or maybe you have another solution. Here's my configuration,
and the codecs I'm sure I installed:

    Dual processors
    WinXP SP1

    Nimo CodecPak
    AC3
    XviD
    DivX
SVCD (To play SVCD movies in Windows Media Player)
    ffdshow

I think that's all of them. And of course there's a few that
aren't listed under Add/Remove Programs. Also, using the
Add/Remove Programs, would that get rid of all rements
    of the codecs?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    TIA
    Why doesn't this work?

    Turk,

I am having the same problem as you. I recently reformatted my hard drive and am in the process of trying to reinstall everything again. Right now my TMPGE isn't working either. Just like you, it crashes everytime I load an AVI file.

I went through this last year too. I would be willing to bet we both have a codec problem. That's what it was for me last year. One solution might be for you to just install the entire Nimo Codec Pack. (Listed in the tools section to the left). I did that last year and TMPGE and Virtual Dub (which I was also having a problem with) both worked fine. Installing the whole codec pack created another problem for me, however. My daughter's "Sims Unleashed" game would crash whenever she tried to play it. Sims tech support was no help. I don't know how I decided to do this but I uninstalled the entire codec pack and the Sims worked fine again. Then I knew I needed to install just the right codecs for TMPGE and not the unnecessary ones so my daughter's game would keep working.

What I ended up doing was installing one codec at a time. Then I would try TMPGE and then the Sims game. Then another one. Try both programs again, etc. I started at the top and worked my way down. I can't remember the exact number but I think I installed 9 or 10 of them before I hit the right one to make TMPGE start working. Fortunately, none of these codecs where the one(s) that was adversely affecting the Sims game. (Hindsight being 20/20, I should have made a note of which ones before I reformatted).

That is what I will be doing tonight; installing one codec at a time until TMPGE starts working.

    Hope this helps.

Hi Vanster, thanks for your reply.

I think if I can get all of the codecs removed and start afresh,
I can get it working again. But I've a few codecs that don't
appear in the Add/Remove Programs. The AC3, DivX, and the
codec used to play SVCD's within Media Player.

Anyone have an idea how I can get those removed?

    TIA
    Why doesn't this work?

I ended up installing all of the video codecs in the Nimo Codec pack. Now TMPGE works and so does the Sims game. The Sims problem must have been caused by one of the audio codec that I didn't install.

Turk, try installing all of the video codecs in the Nimo Codec pack. I don't think TMPGE is adversly affected by too many codecs. I would be willing to bet your problem is caused by not having the right one installed.

No, for f*cks sake - don't install Nimo. It will break more than it makes. For each AVI you stumble on, use GSpot to tell you what codec it uses, then download and install this and only this. Last Nimo install (almost) forced me to reformat and reinstall.

    Mats,

I agree; don't install the entire Nimo pack. As I stated in my above post, it adversely affected another program on my system. (Maybe more that I didn't know about too). In my case, however, I only installed the video codecs and nothing else. Now, TMPGE works fine.

I did use G-Spot prior to installing them all and it said my system had the necessary codecs for the AVI file I was trying to open. TMPGE still wouldn't open it. Now that I've installed all the video codecs (and nothing else) TMPGE works fine.

One thing I would STRONGLY suggest; if you have Windows XP create a restore point before installing any part of the Nimo Codec pack. You may need it.

Thanks to all of you for your comments. As it stands now,
I've got all of the codecs uninstalled except for the AC3,
the codec I use to play SVCD's in WMP, and DivX, which
for some reason doesn't appear under the Add/Remove
    Programs group.

Vanster, everything will return to normal once I get the
rest of the codecs uninstalled. I took the time to read the
contents of the Nimo Pak, and didn't realize it has all
the codecs I've been installing separately.

mats.hogberg, I'll make sure I only use the necessary
codecs from the Nimo Pak. Also, I've always used GSpot
as a reference as well as a way to make sure I've got
    the right codecs installed.

Dadsgrice, this problem occurs with both PAL and
NTSC movies. I still think its a codec problem. Which
means I think I've got to many installed.

Again, does anybody know how to remove the DivX
codec that doesn't have an uninstall file in it's directory,
or doesn't appear in the Add/Remove Programs group?
What about removing the AC3 codec?

    TIA
    Why doesn't this work?

How to get rid of codecs is a matter of which OS you got. On my W2k, I go to the control panel, Sound & Multimedia, Hardware(!), Video-CODEC, Properties, Properties tab. Now you can remove the codec you want.

Thanks Mats, I'm using WinXp and the location is similar.
I got the DivX 5.02 codec removed, along with the folder
and Registry. I think I'll leave the AC3 installed and omit
it from the installation of the Nimo video Pak.

    I'll advise on the outcome!

Well, if you can believe it, I got the majority of the codecs removed.
Reinstalled them (Nimo CodecPak) and installed TMPGEncPlus. Made
the necessary changes to the VFAPI tab under Enviromental Settings,
    and the CPU tab.

Imported part 1 of a movie into the program, made the necessary
settings and started the encode. Lo-and-behold, it started without a
hitch. Turned into a mpeg2, which I used Nero to burn, and it turned
    into a beautiful SVCD.

I imported part 2 into TMPGEnc, made the necessary Source changes
started the encode and got this error:

Write error occurred at address 00401C9D of module 'TMPGEnc.exe'
    with 020DFE1C
    .

It crashed the whole program and hasn't worked since. Also for some
reason every movie I've tried to encode (XviD) and even play using
WMP is GREEN. I've uninstalled the Nimo codecs and reinstalled them.
I've even used a different XviD codec to no avail. Every XviD movie
    is GREEN!

    HELP!

    TIA

P.S. I've also made a list of all of the codecs from the Nimo CodecPak
installed, if that would be helpful.

  12. I just read a thread the other day on here about green screens in TMPGenc. Do a search and you should be able to find it quickly. Also, I remember reading a guide that addressed this issue. Should also be easy to find in the guides section. Good luck!

ffdshow is the answer to green XviD playback - At least to me. If that still wont work, try cheating your system by changing "XviD" to "DivX" in your avi with FourCC Changer.

alenhard, thanks for the heads-up! I found that the majority
of the problems stemed from codecs. So I uninstalled NimoPak
again and installed a standalone XviD codec and nothing else.
The GREEN is gone! Encoded part 2 of the movie which came
out just as beautiful as part 1. Thanks again!

mats.hogberg, could I eliminate the NimoPak altogether and
go with standalones for the rest of the major codecs (DivX)?
I've found individual codecs, and even one for ffdshow? Or is
there something in Nimo I need?

    TIA

There's nothing in Nimo you need - If a certain AVI wont play, just run GSpot on it. It will tell you what codecs U need. DL and install just those. Pretty soon, you'll have a system with all the codecs you need, and none that you don't need. Nimo just creates conflicts and whatnot. Stay clear.

Just wanted to let everybody know that I did another
format and clean install. It got so frustrating that I
said screw-it, I'll start all over.

I've since installed only the DivX v5.02 along with
the XviD codecs. I'll install any others as needed.

Thanks again for all the help!
