  1. Hello

I've just done my first dvd rip.
For some odd reason the audio on the finished
VCD is oddly tingly and metallic (as if it was noise reduced)
especially in spots where there's speech only.

I've not selected any reduction methods at any spot.
I've used SmartRipper, DVD2AVI and TMPGENC according
to guides. Anyone know what might cause this ?

Did you set dvd2avi to resample the audio from 48kHz to 44100Hz? If not then TMPGenc did it itself, and that is definitley your problem. Its sample rate converter is known to introduce this metalic quality that you seem to be experiencing. If you want you can just let dvd2avi do your resampling, but it takes ages. The preferred method, at least when using the method you have chosen, is to use ssrc.exe (shibatch encoder) as an external frequency rate converter from within TMPGenc.

Just do a web search on ssrc, it shouldn't be hard to find. In TMPGenc click on Options/Environmental setting/external tool. Under sampling frequency converter check the box and point it to the ssrc.exe. You may also want to download toolame.exe and use it as an external audio encoder in this tab as well, since the general consensus is that it is higher quality than TMPGenc.

Once you have this tab setup, just encode as normal. When it comes time to do the audio TMPGenc will run these external programs for you and your metallic sound should disappear.

I'll save you the trouble of the search for ssrc.
    http://shibatch.sourceforge.net/
You can also find it at Doom9.org in the downloads section.
    Warning! I'm baaaaaaaaack

  4. Cheers

It worked. I got the ssrc and set tmpenc to use it like you advised.
The sound now encoded as 'normal'.

  5. I get this tinny quality to my soundtracks when encoding an AVI captured from VHS. There is not audio resampling involved. Any advise on that?
