  1. This guide assumes that the movie only on a DVD9 disc is still larger 4.7GB therefore too big to fit on a DVD-R.

I am fussy and I like the best quality DVD9 movie only backup, the ideal method is to demux and multipass transcode with CCE - this is very fast, but involves many manual processes, especially if you want subtitles.

There are programs such as DVD Shirnk, DVD2one, DVD95Copy that will compress the video down to DVD-R size (very fast), but the quality suffers - at least DVD2one comparisions I saw on www.mrbass.org were noticable on some scenes. (this is because they compress the video, not transcode - at least DVD2one does)

InstantCopy does a multipass video quality check, then transcodes the video - at faster than real time on a P4 2.53GHz. The problem is InstantCopy will not let you remove the menu or extras, there is a registry key that lets you remove extras, but navigation is not correctly updated therefore the disc will not play in many stand alone DVD players.

The solution is to use DVD Toolbox (freeware) to rip out the main movie and select the audio/sub tracks you want, this take about 10 mins ish, and leaves you with a VIDEO_TS folder you can open with InstantCopy.

The just let InstantCopy do it's work, as all it has left is the main movie.

  3. Hi,
    1) You said "Movie only". This meant we have to use DVDdecryptor to select "main movie" only correct?

    2) Since IC messed up the .ifo file if we removed some titles using IC. Now, If I "select all files" in the DVDdecryptor. Can we use this DVDToolbox to strip out unwanted titles --> then run IC. Will this process make IC to produce a "CORRECT" .ifo file so that it will works on most stand alone dvd player?

    Thanks

I'm not sure if you still want a reply....

The full guide is now posted, you rip all files from the DVD

DVDToolbox re-authors the main movie and corrects navigation.

    InstantCopy just transcodes.

I suppose you could use IFO Edit, but that program is not that easy to use (I've not grasped it yet, but I like DVD toolbox)

The problem is InstantCopy may let you remove extras with the registry ket, but it does not update the navigation - resulting in movies that don't play back on standalone players.

Maybe you could remove the extras in InstantCopy, then use a program to correctly udpate the navigation afterwards?

If someone can point me in the right direction I would be interested, maybe a good suggestion for future DVDToolbox, it was an unheard of tool until recently.

I use InstantCopy as it retains good quaility without the hassle of maunal transcoding and re-authoring methods.

  10. I was wondering, if you put dummy file insted of the big vob of the extra you don't want, is it working ?

IC7 can't rip extra, if you replace those extra with a dummy file (black video of 1 seconds) and with the same name of the real vob file (ex:VTS_01_1.VOB ...) would it work ? IF in the menu you select this option, it would play the 1 second movie ?

just an idea I'm a newbee to this

The navigation would need to be updated, as some DVD players check for errors ie. 1 GB file suddenly 100mb.

You can use IFO Edit to remove things I think, but it's not simple.

  12. ok I understand... IFOedit don't look simple

Is your tutorial keep the menu ?

    Just the movie only.

The next version of DVDToolbox will allow keeping of the menus (according to their site)

Excellent Zippy, I have been using Instant Copy and then using IFOEdit to remove all the menus and other bs. I never thought of doing it this way. Thanks again.

  15. doesnt dvd2one do this automatically if the movie size will fit onto a dvdr after the audio tracks are ripped out? (leave the movie alone?). cuz i generally rip just the main movie (anywhere from 4-7 gigs) and then rip out all the audio except like the dts/ac3 english and the 2 channel english and then usu its down to around 5 gigs even on the avg. so then d2o transcodes it a tad and its generally not noticeable.

The point of my guide is the improved quality of InstantCopy on movie only backups. InstantCopy cannot rip extras or audio/sub tracks correctly on it's own.

Also DVD2one compresses the video NOT transcodes, therefore more of a quailty drop.

    Maybe I missed your point.
