  1. All I wanna do is convert it to an avi or mpeg that I can edit and burn. I've tried about a dozen different video editing/converting programs and nothing has worked. I'm currently trying STOIK video converter and it is progressing but I'm gonna end up w/ a file that is about 20gb (original is 585 mb)! I'm at the end of my persistence and I'm about to give up. If ANYONE can help me out, I would be much obliged

the size of the original doesn't matter. its the bitrate. you have to use an older version of virtualdub to open asf files.

What kind of a man are you? The guy is unconscious in a coma and you don't have the guts to kiss his girlfriend?

  3. The older version of vdub did not work either, even with the smr codec. I tried that before posting here. Instead of getting the "can't recognize asf...blah blah blah" message I get one saying it's an illegal file. After 3 days of trying to convert it, I have given up and deleted this file. I'm sure it exists in a friendlier file format somewhere out there....

AlthoughStoik is a good program, there are several types of files it cannot handle. Use ASFTools v.3.1 This program can re-encode ASF and WMV files that are not "properly" encoded and re-encode them in AVI.

When you create the AVI file, use a suitable codec to reduce file size. DivX is a good choice for a codec. Use DivX 5.02. You can use max. quality for encoding (1 pass, constant quality = 2) and the file size will never exceed 2Gb/hour of movie. If the image quality of the ASF is not excellent, then you can safely use a Q=3 and drastically reduce file size without loosing in quality.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
