When converting files from Divx to MPEG-1 with Tmpgenc I sometimes get an error that says the system is out of virtual memory (or something like that). How do I increase the size of my virtual memory in Win 2k Professional? Is this part of a larger problem?

    system specs:
    1.4 GHz Athlon Processor
    196 Mb SDRAM
    1 10 Gb HD 5400 RPM
    1 2 Gb HD 5400 RPM
    ECS K7AMA motherboard
    Windows 2000 Prof.

  2. 196mb of memory with your Athlon 1.4ghz? Uhhh last I checked a 256 stick of PC133 was about 20 bucks. If I were you I would max out your motherboard and forget about virtual memory all to gether. 768mb's for 60 bucks. Try http://www.pricewatch.com for memory prices.

  3. 60Gb hard drives are a little over $100 now as well.

I know but unfortunatly i'm poor right now, even to poor to buy a $20 stick of ram but believe me that will be my next purchase ($35.99 for 256 Mb DDR 2100 at crucial.com + free shipping. great site). I'm just looking for a temporary fix cause it may be a month or more before i can score some more RAM. And a new hard drive will be the nex thing. The processor and motherboard broke me.

i had a similar problem when trying to multiplex with tmpgenc 12g. not sure about win2K, but on my win98se machine, i right-clicked on 'my computer', clicked on 'properties', selected the 'performance' tab and re-configured my virtual memory management paging file from a fixed size of 512mb to 1gb for my amd k6-3 350mhz system (256mb ram). i haven't seen the 'out of virtual memory' message again.

i never really cared for the way MS windows dynamically manages virtual memory, which is why i usually set it to manual and some fixed size for the paging file. i'm gonna hold off on a memory upgrade until i buy a (MUCH) faster mobo/cpu.

I can change it in my NT machine at work the same way but Win 2k seems to be different.

  7. For Win2K:

Go to "Properties" on "My Computer"
    Click the "Advanced" tab
    Click the "Performance Options" button
Click the "Change" button under Virual Memory
    Configure however you deem appropriate

If any of these steps don't work, one can only presume that your machine has been restricted, or that you are not logged on as Administrator.

  9. Do you have enough space left on your drive where Windows2000 is located. TMPGenc is also using your temp folder on this drive if you didn't set it to another file/drive.
Check Option -> Environmental setting -> Folder setting in TMPGenc.
