  2. 248mb is way too low, I would definitely add more ram, or better yet, just upgrade your system

You can increase your page file manually as a temporary measure (it uses the hard drive as virtual memory, but the hard drive will thrash as it swaps). Right click my computer, advanced tab, settings under performance category, advanced tab, virtual memory. You should set it so the min & max size are equal, so it doesn't constantly re-size and cause more performance issues. I would set it at least 2-4GB on your system if your listed specs are correct

You can also reduce consumption by closing unnecessary programs and services

If your system specs are correct then you could sure benefit from more ram. If that is not an option but you have a small spare hard drive you can pop that in to your pc and change your page file to that hard drive. I did this once on an old system that I had a long time ago that only had 384mb ram. I put a spare 4gb hard drive in and used it as a dedicated page file drive. It sure helped.

More ram would be more efficient though and you can find old ram on ebay for decent prices.

In general, setting the size of the swap file to about 1.5-2.5 times the size of your physical RAM.

256mb, assuming 8 used by onboard video isn't bad but consider getting an addon gpu of some kind so that system memory is for system only.

Also: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314834 ... about clearing the swap file on shutdown ... means system always starts with a clean swapfile.

    And: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-au/sysinternals/bb897426.aspx ... pagedefrag.
