  1. Say I capture video with an analog/digital box (like the Canopus ADVC-100) and save in DV format. The video is then loaded into Vegas Video v4.0. If I load the video into VirtualDub, I can filter it in many ways such as noise reduction, smoothing, resizing, etc. Does Vegas have a way to filter the video like this?

    TIA...

I haven't checked out Version 4 yet, but version 3 certainly has a good selection of similar video & audio filters, bundled as a set of plugins that are accessable through the Tools -> Video -> Video Track FX option.

I assume that Version 4 should be the same or better.

Thanks for the head up. I looked in there and couldn't find anything for noise reduction though. The filter I'm after is analagous the the 'dynamix noise reduction' filter in VirtualDub.

The reason for this is this - I converted a VHS movie over to DV format using my Sony DVMC-DA1. I then used Vegas to render the movie as an MPEG2 file. Result: 4.1 gigs. I then used VDub to filter the noise out of the DV file and frameserved to TMPGEnc to encode to MPEG2. Result: 3.7 gigs. 0.4 gigs of space reclaimed by simple noise reduction., plus the movie looked a bit smoother.

I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard that VV4 can use virtualdub filters. I don't know if that applies to audio, but it should include good noise filters because Sound Forge was famous for audio long before they forayed into video. The audio support is one reason why some prefer VV to Premiere.

I don't have a URL in front of me right now, but go to Google
    http://www.google.com
and do a search for virtualdub filters

You should find plenty of them that way. I have around 40-50 VDub filters myself

If you go to virtualdub.org and use the filters link you'll find Don Graft's page with a bunch of filters. Some of them are really useful.
