I'm working on a video that I was given by someone who would like for me to clean it up as much as possible. It's a DV tape that is about 58 minutes long. It is hand held and a bit shaky as a result. It is also noisy due to low light. I intend to use Neat Video to clean up the noise and Mercalli to deshake it. Neither the noise or the shaking is "out of range" for the respective filters; let's just say it's workable. But my question is should I let both filters be applied when I render or should I render one to an intermediate format and then render the other filter from the intermediate file? Both of these filters are very processor intensive and I'm concerned that rendering will be very slow if rendered together. My other concern is that these two filters might conflict with each other if rendered together.

If you use the temporal filtering in Neat you may have a problem, as the stabilising effect of the other filter may throw out Neat's calculations. Then again, it may not. I would just run some simple tests over a few seconds of footage. Try one filter alone, try both filters in different orders etc and see if it does actually make a difference.

The temporal problem was my concern as well. Neither filter was designed to "respect" the other. It will be a week or so before I can get to it but I will do some experimenting and post the results when I finish.

Cool. I will be interested to see what happens.

Something else to try - what happens if you apply Neat to the clip as an FX, then save the project. Then, load the project (not a rendered video) into a new project and then add the stabiliser to this. Does it make a difference ? I am not sure how Vegas processes event FX chains applied in nested projects.
