Since I'm running Win98SE, I can't make an ISO larger than 4 Gig, can I then rip the DVD5 to hard drive in file mode, then move the files into a Video_ts folder and then burn those to disk, or do I need to run the files through something else first? Most of the stuff I've done has been from DVD5 to DVD-R where files are under 4 Gig, so I just make an ISO and burn but I've run into a few discs in my collection in the 4 - 4.6 Gig range that I also want to back-up.

  2. yeah, rip everything in file mode then make your own VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders.

You might want to try it first in .iso mode.

even though Win98 doesn't allow >4Gb files, you might be able to do it anyway.

I'm running WinME (which is essentially 98) which doesn't like >4Gb files either, but when I rip in .iso, if the file is bigger than 4Gb, what I end up with is two files - xxx.iso (about 4Gb), and xxx.dvd.

I also get an error message saying "memory address out of range", but I click "ignore".

I go into Write mode, click on the .dvd file, and it burns the disc with no problems - I've run this on about a dozen movies so far, and have had no problems - everything is there, the menus and chapters work fine, I can fast forward with no problems or freezes.

And I find that it will rip at 5x-6x (on an 8x drive) in iso mode, but only at 2x in file mode.

so unless you've tried it and it absolutely doesn't work, give it a try in .iso mode - worst case, you are out 15 minutes of rip time and have to re-rip.

You can get around the 4 GB limit by using Partition Magic 7.0 or the like to put a partition on your HD using the NTFS format. I wouldn't suggest putting a "partition" on your FAT32 drive, I would suggest you buy another HD and format it to NFTS but if you don't have another HD then a partition will be OK and you will be around that pesky 4 GB file size limit.

  5. Unfortunately Win98 cannot read NTFS partitions.

I tried that a month ago but failed miserably after 4 days of trying. Why did M$ make an OS that is so hard to upgrade to is something I'll never know...

  8. winXP is build on NT (like win2k). All previously MS home os's were based on win9x. Trying to upgrade from fat32 to NTFS is possible (ie. people have done it). But you really should re-partition and reformat your HD to do it.

At anyrate, ripping in file mode solves your 4GB problem.

This is so weird BUT housepig is right! I tried to rip a 4.5 Gig DVD5 in ISO mode and it produced 4 files, including 2 .ISO files and a .DVD file. Selecting that file in the copy to blank DVD part of DVD Decrypter made a perfect 1:1 copy! Looks like some of my PayPal $$ is going to the people who made DVD Decrypter after all...

yeah, I think this may be an undocumented "feature" of DVD Decrypter, that it recognizes the 4Gb limit and makes it's own "overflow" file.

whatever it is, however it does it... man what a great program!

Yes, I have this program. Great for reading Dishplayer drives and using other software to convert the files to Mpeg-2s for SVCD or DVD. Still looking at an XP system in the near future though. That will solve my capping and ripping problems once and for all...
