I am trying to convert a Divx which VDub (1.5.1) says has many bad frames. The movie plays fine in media player but TMPGEnc shuts down aways into encoding. I just don't understand how the thing plays fine on the computer.

Yup, that's just the way it is. The player will just skip past the bad parts but the encoder won't. You can't encode bad frames, so you can try and get another copy or just watch it on your PC.
