need advice for encoding avi to svcd for authoring to dvd

I want to encode my capture to svcd format, ready to put on dvd.
I currently capture 480x480, huffy, vd for editing and audio splitting, tmpgenc.
Should I capture 352x480 or 740x480 avi?
I realise that in tmpgenc I need to change the audio to 48k and 224bit.
Will I still need to run the header conversion?

Of course the reason I am thinking of this is to put 5 maybe 6 eps on one dvd, or should I just encode to dvd format and put 2 per dvd?

480x480 is NOT a supported DVD resolution. You have to have a MPEG2 video stream at either: 720x480, 352x480 or 352x240. That's why many people are choosingto encode to CVD (352x480 MPEG2).

Most standalones will have no trouble playing 48khz audio on CVDs (or xSVCDs). So I would encode to either 720x480 or 352x480, and go ahead and encode to 48khz.

part of my ? is will the 740 give better results than 352, or is the 740 just more overhead for avi capturing? ( and bigger avi captures )

I think you mean 720 As a general rule you want to capture at the highest resolution, bitrate and best quaility that you can. Then encode to a lower resolution, bitrate, quaility, apply filters, etc.

But it also depends on your souce. If you're captured from a 3yr old often played VHS tape of a family wedding vs. digital8 for example.

If you've got the space I'd capture at 720x480. You may or may not want to resize to 352x480 when you encode.

source is dss, got plenty of hd. My 480x480 captures take 16gb for 1 hour. 720 should be around 20g. I'll do a test tonight.

For DSS source it's up to you. 720x480 or 352x480 will look fine. I would make a sample clip (say 1min) of both and see what works for you.
